Nanga Parbat is called German Mountain because of the high number of German expeditions that have taken place in the mountain throughout the past century. German expeditions in the area started from the earliest of the 1930s. The German mount climbers could not ascend Mt. Everest or even K2 during the World War. However, their love for mount climbing helped them discover Nanga Parbat.

Many mountaineers were sent to ascend the peak of German officials to climb Nanga Parbat. While many German climbers failed in reaching to the height of 8126 meters, Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl became the first one to climb the peak in 1953. Unfortunately for the initial 30 German mountaineers, Nanga Parbat was not as kind, and they perished on their way up the mountain.
